It seems like every day we hear about new miracle foods that prevent wrinkles. Unfortunately, the truth is no single food you can eat can completely prevent wrinkles or any other signs of aging. However, there are foods that contain nutrients that help your skin stay healthy and help prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging. We’ll tell you about the foods you should include in your diet if healthy, youthful-looking skin is important to you.

Foods That Prevent Wrinkles

The best foods to prevent wrinkles are simply those included in a well-balanced diet, such as plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables (aim for a variety of colors when selecting produce), lean protein, and whole grains. That said, the following foods are especially beneficial for preventing wrinkles and they have many other health benefits, as well.

Water-Water isn’t exactly a food, but it’s probably the most important thing to consume if you want healthy skin and hope to beat wrinkles. Staying well-hydrated keeps your skin youthful-looking and prevents fine lines and wrinkles. According to the Mayo Clinic, women need an average of nine glasses of water a day, while men need an average of 13 glasses. Pour yourself a tall glass and drink up! Eat juicy fruits and vegetables to increase your fluid intake, too.

Orange veggies – Orange veggies like carrots, tomatoes, and pumpkin are high in antioxidants, which fight free radicals, which damage the collagen in your skin. The breakdown of collagen can lead to wrinkles, so preventing or repairing this damage helps fight wrinkles.

Berries – Berries of all kinds, including blueberries, blackberries, and red raspberries, are all high in antioxidants, too.

Salmon – Salmon, along with other cold-water fish (1), is high in omega 3 fatty acid which nourishes the skin and keeps it plump and youthful-looking. You can also find omega 3 fatty acids in cold-pressed olive oil and walnuts.

Chia seeds – Chia seeds are rich in essential fatty acids and amino acids, both of which are essential for healthy skin and help fight wrinkles. If you’re not sure what to do with chia seeds, try sprinkling them on yogurt or fresh fruit. You can also make chia pudding by mixing ¼ cup of chia seeds with one cup of soy, almond, or coconut milk. Add sweetener if desired as well as any flavorings like vanilla extract or cinnamon, mix well, and allow to sit in the refrigerator overnight. Enjoy topped with fresh berries for some antioxidants.

Wheat germ – Wheat germ contains phytoceramides, which help prevent the epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, from breaking down, which leads to the development of wrinkles. It’s also high in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, and high in protein, the building block of skin tissue. If you’re not sure what to do with wheat germ, try adding it to baked goods, sprinkling it on hot or cold cereals, or adding it to the yogurt along with some fresh berries. If you don’t like wheat germ, add some brown rice to your diet. It’s also high in phytoceramides.

An Anti Aging Juice Recipe

There are lots of juice recipes that promote healthy skin and help fight wrinkles. If you have a juicer, you’ll want to check out a variety of recipes. Who wants to drink the same thing every day? This is one of our favorites, though. Unlike many vegetable juice recipes, the apples and carrots make this one taste sweet while providing plenty of valuable nutrients.

Anti-Aging Cucumber-Carrot Juice Recipe

Ingredients:

One large cucumber (skin left on)

Two apples

Two carrots

One stalk of celery

How this helps:

The carrots contain plenty of antioxidants, while the cucumber (especially the skin) contains plenty of silica, which helps build collagen in the skin.

Of course, you could add some fresh or frozen berries, some chia seeds, or any other foods that prevent wrinkles to your juice, as well. Or be creative and make a shake or smoothie with them, along with some low-fat Greek yogurt for protein.
